The Oscar Schmidt enterprise was founded in 1871 and incorporated in 1911. By the early 1900s, the enterprise had five factories in Europe and a facility on Ferry road in Jersey City. They made all kinds of stringed instruments, guitars, banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, zithers, and Autoharps.

Larger ukuleles, such as the tenor, are becoming increasingly popular for beginners (thanks to their use by professional players such as Jake Shimabukuro). However, they are more suited to advanced solo ukulele playing rather than beginner strumming.
